More about singing

Singing is the ability to produce musical sounds with the voice being different from speech by tone and rhythm. It is a skill that requires highly developed muscle reflexes and, although not much muscle strength is required, it does require a high degree of coordination of the physical processes involved in singing such as breathing, phonation, resonance and articulation.

We call the person who sings a singer or vocalist, and they may do so with or without the accompaniment of musical instruments. As well as in solos, singing can also be done in group, either in choirs of singers with different voice ranges, or in musical ensambles.

While it is true that there are people with a natural talent for singing, the excellence in song may take time, dedication, instruction and lots of practice, so it is necessary to train with a singing teacher or vocal coach who has a well-defined technique and who will teach singing without neglecting the singer's vocal health.

You may have a natural talent for singing, but without singing lessons or proper vocal practice using the adequate vocal exercises you can get injured. On the other hand, You may not have been born with a "voice like an angel", but with practice and perseverance you can too learning to sing.

The need to imitate the sounds of nature, both for camouflage and to attract prey, made early humans start to experiment with different sounds back in ancient times. It is human gregarious and social behavior which has lead us to use our voice as a means to convey feelings, as well as an instrument for day to day communication. Therefore, we can safely say that the larynx was the first musical instrument that served humanity.

At a later stage, the birth of spoken word and the appearance of language became essential elements for the transmission of culture and the development of civilizations. Ancient cultures believed that singing and music were created by the gods, and thus singing was developed by all people, to celebrate holidays, processions and ceremonies of worship.

Vocal pedagogy is the study of teaching how to sing, and it's art and science has a long history beginning in ancient Greece, where special attention was paid to the art of oratory, leading to the first singing schools. Lullabies, wedding or funeral songs, accompanied by a zither, began to occupy an important place in Greek everyday life and good speakers had a prominent place in society.

Such is the importance the ancient Greels gave to the art of singing, that during the Olympic games lyric tournaments dedicated to Apollo began to take place, and both Plato as Aristotle claim singing as an important means for education.

Nowadays, there is still a long way to go in terms of, for example, how children may benefit from singing, however vocal pedagogy continues in constant development.

Human song has been in most cases a form of sustained speech, an activity which, also, several scientific studies suggest may have positive effects on health. Experts believe that both singing and listening to music reduce the level of stress hormones and increase immune system functions, as well as improving our mood.
